Pet transport
Australia to the UK

Moving your dog or cat from Australia to the United Kingdom is one of the most document-intensive pet relocations in the world — but with correct preparation, it is very achievable. Rosardi manages the entire process for you.

Overview — what makes the UK different

The United Kingdom is a Category 3 country for pet imports, which means it has strict requirements designed to protect the UK's rabies-free status. Unlike many other countries, the UK requires a specific sequence of steps that cannot be reordered — if you do them out of order, you may need to restart from scratch and lose months of preparation time.

The good news: the UK government's APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) has a well-documented process, and Rosardi has guided many pets through it successfully. The key is starting early and following the sequence precisely.

Important: The UK no longer accepts EU health certificates. Since Brexit, pets travelling from Australia require a Great Britain-specific health certificate endorsed by an accredited vet and Australian government authority.

The 6-step preparation sequence

These steps must be completed in order. The 21-day wait period after the titre test is strict — there are no exceptions.

1
Microchip implantation
ISO 15-digit microchip must be implanted first — before any vaccinations or blood tests. This is the single most common sequencing error. The chip must be readable throughout the process.

2
Rabies vaccination
Given after microchipping is confirmed. Primary vaccination only (not a booster). Your vet must record the batch number, date, and microchip number on the health record. A booster may be required depending on timing.
After microchip confirmed
3
Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT)
Blood sample taken at an approved laboratory (must be EU or UK-approved lab). Tests antibody levels to confirm the vaccination has been effective. Results must show ≥0.5 IU/ml.
30 days after vaccination
4
21-day waiting period
After the titre test sample arrives at the laboratory and a satisfactory result is confirmed, there is a mandatory 21-day wait before your pet can travel. This wait cannot be waived under any circumstances.
21 days minimum
5
Tapeworm treatment (dogs only)
Dogs must be treated for tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) by a vet, no more than 5 days and no fewer than 24 hours before arrival in the UK. Cats are exempt. This treatment must be documented with product name, dose, and date.
1–5 days before arrival
6
GB health certificate
Issued by an accredited veterinarian and endorsed by the Australian government authority (DAFF). Must be issued within 10 days of travel. This is the document that UK Border Force checks on arrival.

Approved airlines and routing

Not all airlines carry pets in cargo to the UK. The most common approved routings from Australia include:

  • Qantas — direct Sydney or Melbourne to London Heathrow (seasonal)
  • Emirates — via Dubai (DXB) to London Heathrow or Gatwick
  • Singapore Airlines — via Singapore (SIN) to Heathrow
  • Cathay Pacific — via Hong Kong (HKG) to Heathrow

The routing chosen affects your pet's total travel time significantly. Emirates via Dubai typically gives a shorter layover than some Asian hubs. Rosardi reviews all available routes at booking time and selects the option with the best welfare outcome for your specific pet — not just the easiest to book.

Note: Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Persian cats face additional airline restrictions. Some airlines will not carry them in cargo at all. Contact us early if your pet is a brachycephalic breed.
